OpenAI showed their first custom chip. It is called Jalapeño and is designed exclusively for inference. The company claims it already demonstrates significantly better efficiency than competing chips. It is currently in the testing phase, but since the largest launched model is GPT 5.3 Spark, the integration of the chips into full servers is yet to come. It was developed in collaboration with Broadcom, which makes AI chips for Meta, TPUs for Google, and Anthropic also develops their chips with them. The development process was incredibly fast — it took only nine months from the start of development to the first produced chips. A detailed report will be available in a few months, but do not expect OpenAI to sell or rent them.
