Midjourney announced a medical division (LOL!) and is opening a spa center (2xLOL)
The first product is called Midjourney Scanner, which is a full-body ultrasound scanner. It is more than 10 times cheaper than an MRI machine and faster by more than 60 times. Ten of these scanners will be enough to perform more scans than all the MRIs in the world combined. The idea is to allow everyone to have regular scans, which will enable earlier diagnoses.
It is structured like a ring of 40 chips, each with 8960 ultrasound elements, each capable of both receiving and transmitting. The scan takes place in water, with the patient lowered on a lift and scanned as they pass through the ring. In theory, this same technology could be used for therapy, but that is much more complicated than simple scans and is much more regulated, so for now, they are not venturing there.
The company aims to deploy 50,000 of these scanners over the next six years. For the test deployment, they plan to launch a large spa center in San Francisco by the end of 2027. This is the first of several announcements from Midjourney this year that are not related to image generation.
David Holz, the founder of Midjourney, previously founded LeapMotion, a startup that produced hardware for hand tracking. It is not surprising that he is returning to hardware, but the way he is doing it is shocking.
