According to a recent Goldman Sachs report, a ChatGPT query requires nearly ten times more electricity to process than a Google search. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has indicated that the energy consumption associated with artificial intelligence (AI) will be significantly higher than previously anticipated, necessitating breakthroughs in clean energy. As generative AI becomes increasingly prevalent in various applications, its environmental impact raises concerns. The report forecasts a 160% increase in data center power demand driven by AI, with the International Energy Agency estimating that energy use from data centers will double in the next two years, equating to the energy consumption of Japan. This rise in energy consumption is largely reliant on fossil fuels, contributing to substantial carbon emissions unless a transition to clean energy occurs. Furthermore, the training of large language models like GPT-3 and GPT-4 consumes vast amounts of energy and water, straining local resources.
