Empowering publishers in the AI era
Mediacopilot is part of a broader initiative to develop technologies and tools tailored for the AI era. It centers around Really Simple Licensing (RSL), an open standard that empowers publishers to define how their content can be utilized by AI systems. RSL 1.0, which has garnered support from over 1,500 media organizations and major internet infrastructure companies like Cloudflare and Akamai, allows publishers to specify the terms of AI training, indexing, and search applications for their content. This standard enhances control beyond the traditional binary permissions of robots.txt, enabling publishers to permit traditional search indexing while restricting AI search applications. Additionally, RSL 1.0 introduces options for monetary or in-kind contributions from AI systems that utilize noncommercial content, thereby protecting the digital commons. The initiative aims to establish clearer rules for AI training data, providing an alternative to the fragmented licensing agreements currently in place between publishers and AI companies.
